Except because of the overwatch mechanic, starting the mission much closer to the enemies was actually a huge negative and they kept getting free shots on me. Later, a mission popped up where enemies were attacking and the game gave me an option to use the tunnel to sneak up on them. I remember at some point that in the overworld/strategic layer I elected to build a secret tunnel leading into my base. It's a small gameplay decision but it kept confounding me in ways that felt like design oversights. In Hard West you can't do this with your units but enemy units can get a free shot on you if you move close enough to them during your turn. People who have played XCOM probably remember the overwatch mechanic where you can elect to forgo a turn to have a unit shoot at an enemy during that enemies turn. I still think it's alright, and I'm a sucker for "Weird West" themeing but it feels like a game that did not get a lot of playtesting. Hard West is a game I really wanted to like more than I did.
